While Americans and Japanese contributed kabe crepe fabric, Filipinos brought a shirt collar and straight hem, Hawaiians locked down the bright colors and patterns and added other elements to create an early version of the now iconic shirt. The early Hawaiian shirts soon became the unofficial uniform of plantation workers. Care Poly-Cotton fabric is a blend of 65% polyester and 35% cotton. Poly-Cotton shirts are made in Hawaii from this blend of fabric. Poly-Cotton garments are machine-washable in cold water, using a mild detergent, and tumble-dried in low heat. The Hawaiian shirt is not bleached, and is generally wrinkle-free. To care for this kind of garment, avoid direct sunlight, and wash it in cold water, with a mild detergent.
